Electric Fetus

The Electric Fetus - Outside The Heard - October 2016

Madeleine Peyroux
Secular Hymns
Secular Hymns is a spirited and soulful masterwork of loping, skipping, sassy, feisty and sexy tunes delivered in a captivating mélange of funk, blues and jazz. Features original interpretations of songs by Willie Dixon, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Tom Waits, Allen Toussaint, and more.
John Scofield
Country For Old Men

Grammy-winning guitarist, composer and bandleader John Scofield – along with frequent collaborators drummer Bill Stewart, organist and pianist Larry Goldings, and bassist Steve Swallow Scofield – renders 12 country tunes through the prism of vigorous modern jazz. It’s just crazy enough to work.
Lewis Del Mar
Lewis Del Mar
Lewis Del Mar is the self-titled debut album from lifelong friends Danny Miller and Max Harwood. All of the album's 10 tracks were written and recorded in the duo’s 400 sq ft bungalow in Rockaway Beach, NY. The New York Times called their first single, “Loud(y)” a "clattering profane mixed-media anthem” – a compliment. A meticulous and deep listening experience that sounds as if The Books embraced Paul Simon – also a compliment.
Familiar Spirit
Rhyme and Reason

'Familiar Spirit' is Edison's first full-length album, but the Denver-based acoustic trio has already established a passionate fan-base through relentless touring since forming in 2014. Vocalist/guitarist Sarah Slaton, multi-instrumentalist Dustin Morris, and Grammy-nominated guitarist Maxwell Hughes (formerly of The Lumineers) craft alt-folk songs built on stirring instrumentals and vivid emotion.
Jesse Mac Cormack
After the Glow
Secret City Records

From Montreal, Jesse Mac Cormack crafts intimate love songs via acoustic guitars and various electronics. His music is soft, slow, occasionally jarring, and deeply textured, showcasing influences that range from Bill Withers to Caribou all the way to Mdou Moctar.  Also, as you’ll hear on After The Glow, it’s sexy as hell – especially if you love Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden (which, of course, you should) and that long gone softie, Jeff Buckley.
Secret City Records 10th Anniversary
Various Artists
Secret City Records

In honor of its 10th anniversary, Secret City Records has put together this special compilation featuring 34 chronologically sequenced tracks – each chosen by the artist. The 2xCD package also includes an exclusive poster and a download code with 5 bonus tracks by Patrick Watson, The Barr Brothers, Plants and Animals, Suuns, and Thus Owls.
Devendra Banhart
Ape in Pink Marble
Devendra Banhart’s new album, Ape in Pink Marble – his ninth – was written, produced, arranged, and recorded in Los Angeles by the singer / songwriter / guitarist / Freak Folkist. Gentle, surreal, and rich with Banhart’s significant vibrato, it’s a psychedelic wonder that travels both in deep waves and unexpected turns. Q magazine and the Times of London give the new album four stars. Uncut calls it "excellent." You will concur.
Bad Seed Rising
Awake In Color

Led by vocalist Francheska Pastor, Maryland’s Bad Seed Rising have found the bridge between the two teenage sounds that matter most: tightly composed, note perfect radio pop and Metal inspired guitar crunch. Apply the right amount of black lipstick and Awake In Color will be your go-to jam for autumn angst. Just crank “I Can Feel You” and thank us later.
Brent Cobb
Shine On Rainy Day

“It's absolutely no shame that the highest-grade country songwriting seamlessly blends storytelling and advertising techniques… Sometimes, though, a songwriter figures out how to get the same effect without the sale… Brent Cobb is that kind of songwriter.” So says NPR’s Ann Powers, who goes on to call Shine On Rainy Day “an album genuinely worthy of comparisons to often-invoked names like Jesse Winchester and Kris Kristofferson.”
Regina Spektor
Remember Us To Life

Regina Spektor gave birth to her first child in 2014 – a life-changing event that directly inspired her new album, Remember Us To Life. Produced by Leo Abrahams (David Byrne / Brian Eno, Frightened Rabbit, Paolo Nutini) Remember Us To Life is ripe with beautiful arrangements via ensembles ranging from a small trio to a full-blown orchestra.
Herb Alpert
Human Nature
Herb Alpert Presents
Herb Alpert's new album Human Nature finds the iconic musician delving into dance grooves and elements of electronic music in a way he has never done before via five original compositions and Herb's signature reimagining of classics like Michael Jackson's "Human Nature," Burt Bacharach's "Alfie" and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," and Bacharach and Elvis Costello's "Look Up Again."
Big Jesus

Big Jesus contrasts loud and heavy fuzz-laden tones with soft, pop-melodic vocals to create their own unique brand of music. The result is ethereal rock n’ roll that’s multi-faceted and powerful. Oneiric features six brand new songs and four previously self-released tunes, which have been remixed and rerecorded. The result is a trippy group of lush, accessible songs with the surreal feel of a Fellini film.
Apoptygma Berzerk
Exit Popularity Contest
The End

With Exit Popularity Contest, Apoptygma Berzerk founder Stephan Groth takes the analogue soundscapes of innovators like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis and Klaus Schulze, and the driving motorik Krautrock rhythms of Neu!, Cluster and La Düsseldorf, and filters them through his own unique sensibility. Exit Popularity Contest demonstrates an admirable musical purity and sincerity, channeling the best of the past to forge a path into the future.
In 2010, Local Natives galvanized a musical scene in Southern California with the breakout success of their debut album, Gorilla Manor. The band’s second album, 2013’s brooding and lovely Hummingbird, had a difficult birth, but its authors remember it fondly as a beautiful and honest representation of who and where the band was at the time. As the band began to grow, so too grew its lens… Now Local Natives filtered this whole new layer of influences through their spectrum, and the result is their grandest statement yet: Sunlit Youth. As opposed to culling song ideas from jamming, the band’s core trio of songwriters each produced songs on their own, rendering each writer prolific and vastly increasing the number of songs brought to the group space. Together they sussed out the best ideas and worked together in realizing their full potential. Across Sunlit Youth, Local Natives delve into dancier, poppy moments on “Past Lives” and “Masters,” Fleetwood Mac-inspired dark pop on “Dark Days”, blue-eyed-soul stomp on “Coins,” and prospective anthems on “Fountain of Youth” and “Call Me On.” And while this is new ground for Local Natives to some degree, Sunlit Youth never loses those qualities that made us fall in love with them in the first place… And you need it.
