Justin Townes Earle - The Saint Of Lost Causes

Justin Townes Earle - The Saint Of Lost CausesJustin Townes Earle - The Saint Of Lost CausesJustin Townes Earle - The Saint Of Lost Causes - New West Records
The Saint Of Lost Causes is the 8th album from American roots troubadour, Justin Townes Earle.  Earle’s latest album finds a songwriter and artist who is unflinching and unequivocal in his truth. When writing this album, Earle focused on a different America—the disenfranchised and the downtrodden, the oppressed and the oppressors, the hopeful and the hopeless. There’s the drugstore-cowboy-turned-cop-killer praying for forgiveness (“Appalachian Nightmare”) and the common Michiganders persevering through economic and industrial devastation (“Flint City Shake It”); the stuck mother dreaming of a better life on the right side of the California tracks (“Over Alameda”) and the Cuban man in New York City weighed down by a world of regret (“Ahi Esta Mi Nina”); the “used up” soul desperate to get to New Orleans (“Ain’t Got No Money”) and the “sons of bitches” in West Virginia poisoning the land and sea (“Don’t Drink the Water”). These are individuals and communities in every corner of the country, struggling through the ordinary—and sometimes extraordinary—circumstances of everyday life.

Morrissey - California Son - BMG
Morrissey has returned, and he’s singing songs that made you cry and songs that saved your life. After last year’s “heartfelt” (Rolling Stone) cover of Pretenders’ “Back on the Chain Gang” gave fans a taste of what was to come, Morrissey is releasing a highly-anticipated covers album ‘California Son’ this week on BMG. ‘California Son’ traverses the sonic landscape of the 60s & 70s, covering untouchable luminaries like Joni Mitchell, Dionne Warwick, and Bob Dylan while also delving into more obscure musicians of the time, such as early gay icon Jobriath and political activist Phil Ochs. Paying equal tribute to the marginalized stars as he does household names—and taking on these covers with modern alt-rock royalty guests including Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day), Ed Droste (Grizzly Bear), Sameer Gadhia (Young the Giant), and LP — the record serves as a bridge between space, time, and rock music’s past, present, and future.

Cate Le Bon - Reward - MEXICAN SUMMER
It was on a mountainside in Cumbria that the first whispers of Cate Le Bon’s fifth studio album poked their buds above the earth. “There’s a strange romanticism to going a little bit crazy and playing the piano to yourself and singing into the night,” she says, recounting the year living solitarily in the Lake District which gave way to Reward. By day, ever the polymath, Le Bon painstakingly learnt to make solid wood tables, stools and chairs from scratch; by night she looked to a second-hand Meers — the first piano she had ever owned — for company, “windows closed to absolutely everyone”, and accidentally poured her heart out. The result is an album every bit as stylistically varied, surrealistically-inclined and tactile as those in the enduring outsider’s back catalogue, but one that is also intensely introspective and profound; her most personal to date.

Flying Lotus - Flamagra - WARP RECORDS
Enter Flamagra - a work that sweeps up every quantum advance and creative leap of the last dozen years of Flying Lotus career and takes them even further; the Warp release encompasses hip-hop, funk, soul, jazz, global dance music, tribal poly-rhythms, IDM, the L.A. Beat scene, but it soars above a specific vortex whose coordinates can t be accurately charted. Other than to say that it is a Flying Lotus record, perhaps the definitive one. An astral afro-futurist masterpiece of deep soul, cosmic dust, and startling originality. He s aided by a dream cast of collaborators: Anderson Paak, George Clinton, Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon, Tierra Whack, Denzel Curry, Ishmael Butler of Shabazz Palaces, Toro y Moi, and his telepathic kinsman, Thundercat. David Lynch even pops up for an eerie narration wherein he somberly warns that, 'Fire is coming.' But they all naturally bend to the magnetic warp of Lotus spells -- a transfixing hex unto themselves. Limited Edition double vinyl with mirrorboard pop-up gatefold sleeve.

Duff Mckagan - TendernessDuff Mckagan - TendernessDuff Mckagan - Tenderness - Hip-O Records
Guns N’ Roses bassist and New York Times bestselling author Duff Mckagan’s new solo album, Tenderness, is a reflection on his experiences traveling the globe over two and a half years on GNR’s Not In This Lifetime tour. Encountering heartbreak, anger, fear, confusion and divide on his travels during this tumultuous time in our world history, McKagan channeled a collective hurt into songs of monolithic power. The album was produced by recent Grammy winner Shooter Jennings and features Jennings’ band along with appearances by The Waters and The Suicide Horn Section, amongst others. Pressed on 180-gram audiophile black vinyl and housed in a single-pocket gatefold jacket, the vinyl edition features 10 tracks and a unique sequence carefully selected by Duff and Shooter.

New Release Round-Up 05-17-19

New Releases 17 May 2019

The National - I Am Easy To Find - 4AD
I Am Easy To Find is The National’s eighth studio album and the follow-up to 2017’s GRAMMY®-award winning release Sleep Well Beast. A companion short film with the same name will also be released with music by The National and inspired by the album. The film was directed by Academy Award-nominated director Mike Mills (20th Century Women, Beginners), and starring Academy Award Winner Alicia Vikander. Mills, along with the band, is credited as co-producer of the album, which was recorded at Long Pond, Hudson Valley, NY with vocal contributions from Sharon Van Etten, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Lisa Hannigan, Mina Tindle and more. The two projects are, as Mills calls them, “Playfully hostile siblings that love to steal from each other”—they share music and words and DNA and impulses and a vision about what it means to be human in 2019, but don’t necessarily need one another. The movie was composed like a piece of music; the music was assembled like a film, by a film director. The frontman and natural focal point was deliberately and dramatically side staged in favor of a variety of female voices, nearly all of whom have long been in the group’s orbit. It is unlike anything either artist has ever attempted and also totally in line with how they’ve created for much of their careers.

The Head And The Heart - Living Mirage - REPRISE
The Head And The Heart
are releasing their new LP, Living Mirage, on Warner Bros. Records/Reprise. Early last year, The Head And The Heart came together in the Mojave Desert’s Joshua Tree where they decided to shed old skin before writing their fourth album, Living Mirage, a sweeping, artful expansion of the earthy folk rock that once defined them. This recent “rebirth, a spirit quest of sorts,” as bassist Chris Zasche describes it, came from growing pains after their last album, Signs of Light: the amicable departure of guitarist-vocalist Josiah Johnson, replaced by Matt Gervais (husband to singer-violinist Charity Rose Thielen), and the return of keyboardist Kenny Hensley. “This is literally the most work we’ve ever done on an album,” the band’s Jon Russell remarks, proudly.

RAMMSTEIN - RAMMSTEIN - CAROLINE
RAMMSTEIN is the first new RAMMSTEIN studio album since 2009’s LIEBE IST FÜR ALLE DA. The new album is produced by Olsen Involtini with
Rammstein. Rammstein is Christoph Schneider, Flake Lorenz, Oliver Riedel, Paul Landers, Richard Z. Kruspe, and Till Lindemann.

Jimmie Vaughan - Baby, Please Come Home

Jimmie Vaughan - Baby, Please Come HomeJimmie Vaughan - Baby, Please Come HomeJimmie Vaughan - Baby, Please Come Home - Last Music Company
When it comes to the blues today, there are a handful of guiding lights to make sure the music stays true to its powerful source. The sound of pleasure and pain that first sparked musicians to create such a sound is a force that can never be underestimated. The mojo has to be there. Texas guitarist/singer Jimmie Vaughan has dedicated his life to making sure the blues not only stays alive, but remains full of life and an inspiration to all who listen. He's held onto the spirit of the blues for more than 50 years, and he isn't about to stop now. Vaughan's first studio album since 2011, Baby, Please Come Home is a rolling and righteous celebration of everything the blues can be.

Ryan Pollie - Ryan Pollie

Ryan Pollie - Ryan PollieRyan Pollie - Ryan PollieRyan Pollie - Ryan Pollie - Anti
Inspired by the warm, inviting sounds of ‘70s singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne and Graham Nash, Ryan Pollie wanted to make the most personal music of his career. He had released two albums as Los Angeles Police Department, and now he was ready to shed the protective barrier of his old band name — to make music, simply, as himself. Bolder and crisper than the albums he’s made as Los Angeles Police Department, his self-titled record emerges from a deeply collaborative place. He invited many of his closest friends over to his home to record the album, and a feeling of warm camaraderie shines through the music. “When somebody plays on a song, their character is in it,” he says. “I like to think all my friends are on this record. Their personality is in it. That was really important to me. I’m able to do what I do, mentally and emotionally, because of the people around me.”

Minor Poet - The Good News

Minor Poet - The Good NewsMinor Poet - The Good NewsMinor Poet - The Good News - Sub Pop
After spending years writing and recording music by himself in various bedrooms and basements, Andrew Carter hit his stride with the debut Minor Poet album, And How!. Made on a creative whim with no outside expectations, the eleven-song collection combined Carter’s love of carefully-crafted pop with a loose, fun, off-the-cuff recording aesthetic. The album was released in 2017 and developed a small but loving fan base, and Minor Poet has grown from a passion project into a cross-country touring band with write-ups in publications such as American Songwriter, Magnet, The Wild Honey Pie, Impose, and more. Minor Poet’s second album, The Good News, is a six-song collection that expands the boundaries of what constitutes the band’s sound. In just twenty-two minutes, the songs take apart the standard formulas of guitar-based rock and infuse them with vibrance and energy. On opener “Tabula Rasa,” interlocking guitars and a Farfisa organ carry the song through until everything drops suddenly into a doo-wop section that wouldn’t be out of place on a 1950’s.

Prince Originals Release Coming June 21 and July 19

Prince Originals Release Coming June 21 and July 19

Prince Originals

This June, The Prince Estate, in partnership with Warner Bros. Records and TIDAL, will release Originals, a 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings that illuminate the vital, behind-the-scenes role Prince played in other artists' careers. The tracks were selected collaboratively by Troy Carter, on behalf of The Prince Estate, and JAY-Z.

By the mid-1980s, Prince was dominating the charts even as a writer/producer with songs he'd composed and recorded for others. In addition to releasing nine of his most commercially successful full-length albums, he also wrote and recorded endless reels of material for proteges The Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Jill Jones, the Family, and Mazarati. Occasionally, Prince's original demo recordings would be used as master takes on their albums, with only minor alterations to the instrumentation and a replacement of the vocal tracks. Other times, artists would rely on his demos to guide them through their own recording process, with Prince's initial take informing their final version of his song. The aggregate effect was a complete saturation and transformation of the pop music landscape, with Prince both leading and subverting mainstream culture.

Hijinx and Hearsay Publication Celebration with The New Standards

Hijinx and Hearsay Publication Celebration with The New Standards

Electric Fetus - Minneapolis

Wednesday, May 1st - 7:00 p.m.

Join us for a conversation hosted by PD Larson between two longtime early chroniclers of the Minneapolis scene and cultural landscape of the Twin Cites as they share their canny insider tales and an abundance of black and white photos—many never seen before—from an era still relevant today!

In the summer of 1979 writer Martin Keller and photographer Greg Helgeson, two twenty-something guys, were thrown together on a new music monthly ignobly called "Sweet Potato". Over the next several years, the two chronicled the Minneapolis scene and the cultural landscape of the Twin Cities, covering some of the most influential artists, musicians, writers, comedians, and entertainers of the past forty years. They profiled legendary musicians from across the globe and across musical genres—Paul and Linda McCartney, Bob Marley, U2, James Brown, John Lee Hooker, Devo, and more—as well as homegrown talents ranging from Dylan and Prince to the Replacements and Hüsker Dü. They covered such disparate writers as William Burroughs and Dr. Seuss, and young, up-and-coming comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, Louie Anderson, and Lizz Winstead.

In Hijinx and Hearsay, Martin Keller and Greg Helgeson are at it again, offering a delectable, fun, and fresh perspective through Helgeson's photography and new stories and insights by Keller that shed fascinating light on a singular, influential era in popular culture in Minnesota.

This is the area where the Prince RSD releases will be, including our exclusive Purple cassette for Prince - The VERSACE Experience: PRELUDE 2 GOLD. Closer to Record Store Day we'll update our website with a list of the RSD exclusives we'll have in stock on April 13th.

KFAI Minneculture Live from Minnesota Mixtape

KFAI Minneculture Live from Minnesota Mixtape

Electric Fetus - Minneapolis, Duluth and online

The KFAI Minneculture Live From Minnesota Mixtape is here! This cassette is just $5 and is a sweet mix of songs from Minnesota talent recorded live at different venues around the state.

All proceeds to benefit KFAI, a nonprofit community radio station. These historic recordings capture various stages of growth among Minnesota acts.  Collectively, the Mixtape serves as a time capsule of Minnesota music spanning 2010-2017. Many acts on the Mixtape have since shifted directions, like Caroline Smith (now known as Your Smith), while others, like Gospel Machine, have dissipated altogether.

Live from Minnesota Mixtape Track List:

1. Barbara Jean: “Wishing Well” at Icehouse in Minneapolis
2. Bad Bad Hats: “Girl” at the Masonic Temple in Winona
3. See More Perspective: “For My People” at Patrick's Cabaret in Minneapolis
4. Gospel Machine: “That Ring” at Icehouse

Prince: Before the Rain puts into focus the hallmark imagery—including behind the- scenes, candid, and casual shots— Allen Beaulieu was Prince’s photographer and friend beginning in the late 1970s. He photographed three album covers and toured extensively with the artist. The book features recollections from Beaulieu on his personal and professional relationship with Prince. Going deeper into the context of these crucial years, supplemental text brings it all together with reminiscences from former bandmates, including Bobby Z., Dez Dickerson, André Cymone, and more.
