Barely a year after the release of their acclaimed debut album Dogrel, Fontaines DC have returned with an intensely confident, patient, and complex sophomore album. A Hero's Death arrives battered and bruised, albeit beautiful - a heady and philosophical take on the modern world, and its great uncertainty.

Son of Davy/span>

After undergoing open heart surgery that saved his life, Crockett says he considered calming down for “just a minute.” Welcome to Hard Times was shaped by his heart issues and producer Mark Neill’s desire to make a dark, gothic, country record. “I think you can hear that deep, dark sadness in this record,” he says, “but I think it’s the kind of darkness that will uplift others.”

Shaggy - Hot Shot 2020

New Shaggy out now!

After serving in the US Marines where he found his distinctive baritone sound by chanting cadences while marching, Shaggy has gone on to almost single-handedly usher dance hall music into the mainstream and, in the process, create some of the most memorable musical moments in our lives.  Who hasn’t quoted his cheeky smash “It Wasn’t Me,” dabbed to “Boombastic” or hummed along to “Angel?”  On his new album Hot Shot 2020 - commemorating the 20th anniversary of his 10-million selling Hot Shot album, the two-time GRAMMY award winner puts a new spin on his most beloved songs and invites special guests such as Sting and Rayvon to celebrate along. Hot Shot 2020 even includes an irresistible rendition of Eddy Grant’s “Electric Avenue” and Shaggy’s new world wide hit “Banana” with fellow Jamaican Conkarah.

Matador

A decade after debuting on Matador, Spoon's first album Telephono and follow-up EP Soft Effects have been brought back into print by Merge, reminding us that while the band's taut rhythms, spiky guitars, and jaded urbanity have always been with them, the starkly gestural rock they perfected on later efforts was only attained by a gradual paring away of excesses.

Pop Smoke's legacy continues with posthumous debut album, Shoot For The Stars.... Features include Quavo, 50 Cent, Roddy Ricch, Lil Baby & more. True to the intentions of showing the breadth of his artistry on "Got It On Me", fans will discover a new side of Pop Smoke, stepping outside of the Brooklyn drill sound that he brought on a global scale.

Last Gang

Mondo Cozmo does not regret putting his fist through that window while crafting his second LP. In the aftermath, he learned how to “Say no,” departed amicably from the major label system, “taped a fucking pick to his cast” in order to play guitar, lost feeling in the aforementioned hand for two years, and wrote the rock ‘n’ roll record he always meant to write.

Somewhat Damages/AWAL

While they have sonically mastered the art of dreamy, hook-laden synth-pop, The Naked and Famous have stuck to their guns as far as intimate storytelling. Recover is largely an autobiographical record rooted in a powerful sentiment of survival, and of the very human process of self-preservation - of saving, choosing and celebrating oneself in a world constantly trying to put us down.

Laura Marling - Song For Our Daughter

Laura Marling - Song For Our DaughterLaura Marling - Song For Our DaughterLaura Marling - Song For Our Daughter - Chrysalis / Partisan
Laura Marling’s exquisite seventh album ‘Song For Our Daughter’ arrives almost without pre-amble or warning in the midst of uncharted global chaos, and yet instantly and tenderly offers a sense of purpose, clarity and calm. As a balm for the soul, this full-blooded new collection could be posited as Laura’s richest to date, but in truth it’s another incredibly fine record by a British artist who rarely strays from delivering incredibly fine records. Taking much of the production reins herself, alongside long-time collaborators Ethan Johns and Dom Monks, Laura has layered up lush string arrangements and a broad sense of scale to these songs without losing any of the intimacy or reverence we’ve come to anticipate and almost take for granted from her throughout the past decade.

Prince - Sign O' The Times Reissues due out Sept. 25th

On September 25th, The Prince Estate, in partnership with Warner Records, will reissue Sign O’ The Times, with the classic album remastered for the very first time.

The Super Deluxe Edition features 63 previously unreleased tracks, as well as a previously unreleased 2+ hour video concert performance from Prince’s legendary vault that illuminate his wide-ranging and prolific creativity in this era.

The Super Deluxe Edition brings fans all the audio material that Prince officially released in 1987, as well as 45 previously unissued studio songs recorded between May 1979 and July 1987, and a complete live audio performance from the June 20, 1987 stop on the Sign O’ The Times Tour at Stadium Galgenwaard in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

In addition, both CD and vinyl sets also boast a brand-new DVD containing the complete, previously unreleased New Year’s Eve benefit concert at Paisley Park on December 31, 1987, which was Prince’s final performance of the Sign O’ The Times Tour stage show and his only on-stage collaboration with jazz legend Miles Davis.

The Super Deluxe Edition set also features a 120-page hardcover book containing Prince’s previously unseen handwritten lyrics for many of the songs from the era, including the hits “U Got The Look,” “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man,” and “Hot Thing,” iconic unseen images from the era taken by Prince’s primary photographer in the mid-1980s to early 90s, Jeff Katz, plus images of archive assets including original analog tape reels and studio tracking sheets.

The Super Deluxe Edition book is completed with brand-new liner notes by Prince’s creative peers and friends Dave Chappelle (in conversation with photographer Mathieu Bitton) and Lenny Kravitz; Prince’s longtime engineer Susan Rogers; Daphne A. Brooks, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of African American Studies, American Studies and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies at Yale University; Minneapolis radio host and author Andrea Swensson, host of the Official Prince Podcast; and Prince scholar Duane Tudahl.

The Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition shines a forensic light on the creative output of this truly unique musician, songwriter, producer, and performer at a pivotal point in his career and demonstrates why his unsurpassed body of work continues to generate so much love and passion around the world.

Produced over the course of two years, Yaeji started writing with no specific narrative in mind. Through that freedom, melded in cozy and laidback production, the album spans a wide range of sounds, including the Korean indie rock and electronica that she listened to as a teenager in Seoul, and late ’90s and early 2000s hip hop and R&B she grew up listening to.

Since breaking through with her first two Eps, Arca’s created an unprecedented body of work drawing from club music, experimental noise, and the ballad tradition of her native Venezuela, while reaching beyond music to encompass performance, visual art, and technology. For KiCk i, Arca pursues pleasure, dignity, and dance floor liberation by refracting club music, reggaeton, and pop through her radical vision.

After a legendary career as the enigmatic frontman for Pulp, and a successful run of solo albums and collaborations, Jarvis Cocker debuts his first new full length album since 2009 with musical project JARV IS... an ongoing live experience because life is an ongoing live experience. In a departure from the nuanced introspection of her previous work, Fetch the Bolt Cutters is Fiona Apple’s fifth studio album and her first in eight years since 2012’s The Idler Wheel. It’s the sound of a woman freeing herself from the constraints of form, expectation, and establishment — burning everything down to make a profoundly singular work unlike anything that’s ever existed.

Known for their stellar synth-pop melodies, and relatable lyrics about love, loss and everything in-between, pop quartet The Aces have gained worldwide popularity since their 2018 debut album, When My Heart Felt Volcanic. They describe the new record as a "whole new chapter" for them –– an "an exploration" that deepens their previously established feel-good sound.

The intimate collection of songs featured on Manos’ debut EP has been described as raw and deeply personal. The artist explained, “If it feels like looking in on something private, it is”. The New York Times called “Tennessee,” first single, “An electronic lament, Auto-Tuned and steeped in James Blake and Frank Ocean.”

While the Gentlemen’s sound is clearly steeped in the classic roots, rock and pop music of the ‘60s and ‘70s, there’s a dreamy, spacey, and occasionally progressive element. Add in elements of funk, soul, country, r&b, southern rock, gospel and you have more than just a mere album. Rather, Floor It!!! is a rich and righteous ride.

While on a surface level, Species is an exploration of the sonic possibilities of the Farfisa organ, aided only by a clarinet and double bass, it’s a nod to both humanity and humility. It’s also about suspended time and trance; not just a steady movement from A to B, but as something that flows, meanders and eddies, like water.

The session for Just Coolin’ (March 8, 1959) finds The Jazz Messengers’ saxophone chair in transition. The band had last recorded in October 1958 when they cemented their place in jazz history with the classic album Moanin’ featuring Benny Golson on tenor saxophone. By July 1959, Blakey had recruited tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter who would remain a fixture of the band until 1964.

The new album, produced by Sturgill Simpson, commits her sky-high and scorching rock-and-roll show to record for the very first time. Written over the course of a decade in which the Athens, Georgia-based duo was primarily known for their own respective projects, the songs here represent something of a look behind the curtain, a captivating series of musical journal entries that reveal the evolution of a relationship in all its messy, honest, imperfect beauty.

New Release Round-Up 07-24-20

New Releases

X - ALPHABETLAND - Fat Possum Records
ALPHABETLAND is the eighth studio album by American punk rock band X. Released digitally in April 2020, it is their first studio release in 27 years and the first with their original line-up in the past 35 years. The release has received positive reviews from critics. Alphabetland was recorded across several sessions in 2019 and 2020 with producer Rob Schnapf, who has previously worked with Elliott Smith, Beck, and Joyce Manor. Even though these songs date from a time when the band's only songwriters were vocalist Exene Cervenka and Doe, all tracks are credited to all four members of X and the recording sessions coincided with the individual musicians improving their relationships with one another.

The Naked And Famous - Recover - Somewhat Damaged LTD
The Naked And Famous' album reasserts the group as one of modern indie-pop's most exciting sonic trailblazers, taking them to emotionally inspired depths, while maintaining the fresh effervescence that has led to over 600 million collective streams to date.

Neck Deep - All Distortions Are Intentional - Hopeless Records
With this album Neck Deep wants to continue carving out their own unique space within rock, punk, and alternative music. They have no delusions of "saving rock" or being the biggest rock band out there. They just want to remain Neck Deep and be an even bigger, better Neck Deep than before. They understand their roots are in pop punk, but want to expand on their sound in their own way, taking inspiration from artists like The Beatles and Nirvana who did things their own way and still were able to be massive.

Columbia

Haim regularly push themselves out of their comfort zones, experimenting with glitchy electronics, slatherings of sax, and dubby syncopation (“Another Try”, which feels like a sparkier sibling to Lana Del Rey’s cover of Sublime’s ‘Doin’ Time’). Between all of the new, though, the sisters are still experts at deploying irresistible rock, like the rousing, shout-a-long brilliance of “The Steps.”

Loma Vista

Grey Daze, Chester Bennington’s pre-Linkin Park outfit, had just reformed before the untimely death of Bennington in 2017. Amends feature’s remastered vocals from one of rock’s most recognizable voices. It’s an origin story and a deeply intimate full circle moment among friends and fans. Featuring multiple guests from contemporaries such as Korn, Helmet, Bush, and Breaking Benjamin.

New West

Corb Lund embraces his rich and rustic western heritage with a style that’s unique, honest and resolute, while touching on a range of cowboy themes — from rough-and-tumble tales of lawless frontier saloons, to the somber realities of running a modern family ranch. It’s a classic sound with a twist, something of a rarity these days, but one that evokes the spirit of the American West, past and present.

Monovision is Grammy Award-winning artist Ray LaMontagne’s eighth studio album. The 10 new tracks see Ray not only writing and producing but also add on duties of engineering as well as performing all the instrument. The guitar-driven single, “Strong Enough,” features Ray’s signature raspy vocals his fans have come to love.

Roc Nation

The legendary dancehall singer’s 13th studio album - his first since Grammy-winning Before the Dawn in 2010. Banton says of the album, “[it] comprises 20 tracks. Why? Because it’s 2020... 2020 has a deeper understanding in my mind. It resonates with a clear vision and seeing things for what it is. After a 10-year absence, we try to give the people some music for that missing time.“

Like A House On Fire is an album that shows the group's continuity of a more straight forward and melodic hard rock sound, as established on their previous self-titled fifth album, while also shifting into different genres. It’s also yet another Asking Alexandria album that will divide opinion. And, once again, the band themselves are unlikely to care.

Blue Note

Color of Noize reflects a melting pot of influence and experience with jazz flow, hip-hop groove, soulful depth, spiritual uplift, and creative fire — but the concept is best described in more abstract terms. As Hodge lays it out, “It’s the contrast, it’s the beauty, it’s the chaos, it’s the freedom — all of that.”

Secret City

Although the album directs itself at the failures of people to love and be loved, it also seeks to restore justice and attain blissful union. Its arc crests through the dark towards the light and learns how to dance with the dizzying rhythms of the heart. The songs bubble, sustain, dissolve, expand, retract.

Guitarists Mitch Galbraith says of the new album, “It’s pushing forward into the unknown.” An unknown that consists of 70's guitar rock, country and western, old school funk and synth-heavy new wave to create a deeply contemplative and atmospheric odyssey reminiscent of music legends including Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits and Pink Floyd.

Ambrose Akinmusire follows his acclaimed, genre-busting best-of-2018 manifesto Origami Harvest with another visionary statement on his new album on the tender spot of every calloused moment, which finds the trumpeter examining blackness on an uncompromising set of modern jazz laced with a heavy feeling of the blues.

Growing out of Jones’ acclaimed singles series, the unreleased songs unexpectedly congealed into an album of tremendous depth and beauty. Featuring a range of collaborators from Brian Blade to Jeff Tweedy, Pick Me Up Off The Floor is connected by the sly groove of her piano trios, lyrics that confront loss and portend hope, and a mood that leans into darkness before ultimately finding the light.

The highly anticipated new album, which marks his return to creating music after a four year hiatus from his previous album Phase, was self-produced with additional production by Jacknife Lee, James Flannigan and Brett Cox. The album compiles all four individual volumes of Love, Death & Dancing, kicking off with lead single "Time."

Hailed as an “Americana prodigy” by Rolling Stone and one of the “teenagers shaping pop” by The New Yorker, Brue has always been an artist seemingly wise beyond his years. But on Crash Test Kid he often gets at the heart of a matter or melody with just a simple but insightful turn of phrase or cleverly-picked guitar.

For years, Trixie Mattel has broken boundaries not only for drag performers in the music world but also for LGBTQ+ artists in the genres of country, folk and Americana. Barbara is laid out to reflect a vintage, plugged-in late 60s/early 70s vibe. It hearkens back to the introspective folk that took Trixie to the top of the charts (for her second album One Stone) with quieter country-tinged songs.

portal iii release

portal iii release

portal iii portal iii out on Monday, April 20th!

portal iii, featuring a trio of veteran Minnesota musicians, introduces its debut release with a self-titled double LP of four deep listening instrumental pieces. Bassist Liz Draper (who's played with everyone from the Grammy Award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers to the Balkan folk group Orkestar Bez Ime), had been touring with folk traveler, songwriter and guitarist Charlie Parr of Duluth, MN. The two discovered a shared mutual interest in drone and ambient music. portal iii emerged as a trio when Draper recruited former bandmate Chris Gray from doom project Up the Mountain Down the Mountain to join them on drums. With the three of them sharing a broad range of tastes and playing styles, anything was possible, but it was a need to seek out new sonic territory that led them to create portal iii.

portal iii's self titled debut was recorded over two days at Real Phonic Studio with Erik Koskinen in Cleveland, MN. Having been recorded through hail and a tornado on the rolling prairie landscape seems hauntingly appropriate for their sonic template and connection to place.
