The words "death metal" and "style" don't often go together in most people's books, but for British gentlemen Satanists Akercocke, they fit together like hand in glove. Adding a suit and tie to the pedigree butchery of their music, the London four-piece have so far made waves in the U.K. underground with their self-released debut Rape of the Bastard Nazarene and 2001's outing on Peaceville Goat of Mendes. Now signed to Earache for their third album, international recognition could soon be theirs on the strength of Choronzon.

Akercocke have often been labelled the British Nile, and indeed, if it's rampant blast beats and heads-down death metal you're looking for, then you'll find it here. But you'll also find a daring streak to their songwriting, whether it's in the way they so effortlessly add keyboards when it suits them and drop them when it doesn't, as on the almost Cradle of Filth-style "Upon Coriaceous Wings," or in the helter-skelter structures in which songs such as the title-track shift from Slayer to Arcturus and back again. While the band is vocal and fervent in their worship of "The Blast," they're no death metal fundamentalists: many of the songs blend in black metal shadings, screeches and shrieks in a manner not too far removed from Mayhem, while running like a red thread through songs such as "Leviathan" and "Bathykolpian Avatar" is a hefty Killing Joke influence that time and time again takes the death metal riffs to the next level. If there's a more challenging and satisfying death/black metal record that's been released this year, I've not heard it.
